Greece prepares blacklist for online gaming; RGA announces legal battle

(Jamma) There are 402 online gaming sites that the Greek authorities intend to blacklist: among them, the major European online operators, but also the French PMU and the US casino operator Caesars. The Greek gaming commission plans to ask providers to block access to blacklisted sites, but the Remote Gambling Association (RGA), representing the online gaming industry, argues that this is a measure contrary to European law and that he will engage in a legal battle against the Greek authorities; according to the RGA, the revision of the provisional licenses and the creation of the blacklist are intended to strengthen OPAP's monopoly also in the online sector. “All that the Hellenic Gambling Commission will achieve – explains in a note the number one of the RGA, Clive Hawkswood – will be the closure of the activity of legitimate and regulated operators. Every time a State has tried to maintain its online monopoly, many customers have turned to foreign sites with a more attractive gaming offer. No doubt this will also happen in Greece”.
