Online games. Green light from the EC to the new Hungarian legislation

Spain. In five years the market has collapsed by 38%

(Jamma) Finally the go-ahead from the European Commission arrives for the two Hungarian bills that regulate online games and whose approval process had been slowed down by the sending of a detailed opinion presented by Malta.

One of the two projects contains provisions that replace the rules on remote gambling in force since 1 January 2012 by amending Law XXXIV of 1991 on gambling. Under the project, sports betting, card games and casino games can be organized through communication facilities and systems. The draft also defines the term 'sports betting', which refers to bets on dog and horse racing, matches and sporting events.

The second draft law instead contains provisions concerning the temporary inaccessibility (blocking) of data released through an electronic communications network which carries out the organization of illegal games of chance. If it has to establish a case of unauthorized gambling, the state tax authority orders that the electronic data that makes this illegal organization possible be temporarily inaccessible (for 90 days). Electronic communications providers are required to comply with this order and the National Authority for Media and Infocommunication must organize and monitor its implementation.
