"We believed - reports the student association Link-University Coordination - that after the social alarm repeatedly raised by those who work in the sector (see the campaign promoted by "Libera" on the social and health costs of gambling or the extraordinary experience fielded with the occupation of the Cinema Palazzo in San Lorenzo) the indignation for the thousands of gambling halls that open their doors every day in our cities, a few steps from our homes and from the places we usually frequent was widespread anger, but above all that it should also begin to be shared by the institutions, which have been silent for too long in the face of the spread of the gambling epidemic.
The initiative organized in the Faculty of Economics goes in a completely different direction. We are perfectly aware of the fact that knowledge is neither neutral nor neutral and we believe that the public nature of the university is not compatible with the sponsorship, promotion and dissemination of companies that profit and make money from activities that "may cause pathological addiction ”, fueling everything connected to the increase in the phenomenon: mafia infiltration in games, the growth of the use of usury, the worsening of the living conditions of the most fragile and poorest groups, more exposed to the seduction of slots and lotteries, an impressive increase in underage players, the increase in separations and divorces and so on.
We believe that this time an assumption of responsibility that goes beyond the usual proclamations is necessary and that it is the duty of the public universities of our country to take a clear and clear position with respect to the social scourge of gambling. For this reason we ask that the appointment scheduled for next July 4th be canceled immediately and that no further space be granted to companies operating in this sector”.
