Hungary's parliament approves new gambling law

(Jamma) On 27 June, Hungarian parliamentarians voted on the new gambling law under which the government introduced the concession for all operators wishing to offer gambling and sports betting services. With 235 votes in favor and only 69 votes against, the law was approved according to which operators can obtain a five-year license for online betting, poker rooms and casinos.

The sector industry does not appear to be particularly satisfied with the new law which imposes the payment of 338.000 euros a year to the concessionary companies, a figure deemed excessive considering the potential of the national market. Taxation has been set at 20% on biweekly receipts and a supervision tariff of 2,5%, with a minimum of 100 guilders, 338 euros, and a maximum of 50 million guilders, 170 euros. The blocking of unauthorized sites is also foreseen.
