Lazio region. Lena (Presid. Commissioner of Social Policies): 'Law on gaming, an example of good policy'

(Jamma) The president of the commission for social policies and health, Rodolfo Lena (Pd) commented on the approval by the Lazio regional council of the bill as follows: "Provisions for the prevention and treatment of pathological gambling" , unanimously dismissed last Friday by the VII commission. “The unanimous vote demonstrates that when the collective good and public health are placed at the center of the political debate, there are no sides or partisan interests that hold. Gambling addiction is an evil of our times and must be treated as such, without calculations of opportunism or lightness in placing limitations to protect the weakest sections of the population. The economic crisis of recent years has paradoxically increased the degree of exposure of Lazio and Italian families to gambling, probably in the hope of being able to redeem serious dramas such as the loss of a job, home and loved ones with a simple gamble. What is missing is correct information on the risks of gambling and on the actual odds of winning: for this reason we have also focused a lot on the regulation of advertising and communication in general linked to potentially gambling-related activities. I thank my fellow councilors and the Council offices for the tour de force that we have faced together since last Thursday, demonstrating, with a great sense of responsibility, that a law of fundamental importance for citizens can be approved in less than a week".
