As part of the draft budget for social security, which has been under discussion in the French Assembly since Monday, senators voted in favor of several tax regimes to fight addictions. The government will have every opportunity to reject them at the end of the parliamentary review as provided for in Article 49.3, of the National Assembly which allows it to pass its social security financing bill without a vote.

The provisions proposed by the upper house, however, come from some of the Senate's macronists, who however did not convince the government to give a favorable opinion to some of its amendments.

This group, very much a minority in the Senate and right-wing, has proposed a tax on sugary drinks

At the initiative of several left-wing groups (socialists, environmentalists, radicals), the Senate also voted to establish a tax on advertising spending on gambling, also against government advice.
