The Dutch Chamber of Deputies has voted in favor of banning online gambling advertising and banning very high-risk online gambling. Both motions came from MP Michiel van Nispen and received just enough support to gain a majority. Motions were also approved for a mandatory control of access to online casinos and the veracity of identity documents by the Gaming Authority.

In recent days the Chamber of Deputies voted on 114 motions presented, of these motions, 14 concerned gambling and ten of these were adopted. MPs, for example, voted in favor of banning online gambling advertising, banning clearly very high risk gambling games and mandating an audit for online casinos.

In February, the motion presented by MP Derk Boswijk for a total ban on gambling advertising was not approved. Van Nispen's new motion calls for a ban on online gambling advertising, where previously a ban had been introduced on television, radio and outdoor gambling advertising. As a result, the expansion of the existing ban has the same effect as the ban requested by Boswijk.

Presenting a similar motion again proved useful, because Van Nispen managed to get the MPs to vote favorably and therefore get it approved.

One of the other motions presented by Van Nispen focused on “manifestly very high risk online gambling”. The MP would like to see these gambling games banned, such as online slots, because players have no control over the outcome of the game. The same parties that voted in the motion on online advertising voted in favor of banning high-stakes gambling.

Despite the outcome of the vote, it is unlikely that the motion will be adopted, considering that 77% of the online market is represented by plays on online slots.
