Switzerland: lotteries and betting drop by 1,4% in one year

(Jamma) As shown by the lottery statistics published by the Federal Office of Justice, Swiss lotteries and betting recorded a slight decline compared to last year (2792 billion francs) reaching a total turnover of 2752 billion francs in 2012.

In 2012, licensed lotteries and sports bets generated CHF 2752 billion in Switzerland, as current statistics on lotteries and bets show. This represents a slight decrease from last year of 1,4 percent. Of these 2752 billion francs, 1842 billion were paid out to players in the form of winnings. The difference constitutes the so-called "gross gaming product", which decreased by just 2012 million compared to 3, reaching 910 million francs.

Out of the total resident population, this turnover amounts to 344 francs per capita (2011: 351 francs), while the average winnings per capita amounted to 230 francs (2011: 236 francs).

Dominance of lotto

The games that generate the most revenue continue to be Swiss Lotto and Euro Millions, responsible for 57,1 per cent of the total gaming product (2011: 54,1 per cent). With sales of 576 million francs (2011: 524 million francs), Euro Millions was able to defend its leading position against Swiss Lotto and even improve it. Already about 10 percent of the turnover of lotto is made on the Internet.

Sports betting revenues fell slightly from 161 million francs in 2011 to 156 million francs in 2012.

Product devolution of games

In 2012, the lottery companies Swisslos and Loterie Romande accounted for 99,7 percent of the gross revenue from lottery games and betting, which paid 557 million francs into cantonal lottery and sports funds, as well as directly to associations sports cloak. The remaining 0,3 percent comes from small lotteries and local bets, particularly at racetracks. These games are organized by associations that support their purpose with the proceeds.
