Sports betting is one of the fastest growing gaming verticals in the licensed gaming industry. Many global and European operators, members of the European Lotteries and the World Lottery Association have close agreements with their respective National Olympic Committees and with a large number of sports associations, demonstrating once again the importance of sport, both at a professional and grassroots level. Sport as such remains a binding factor in society, just think of the millions of people who practice it while enjoying a football match or a cycling stage of the Tour de France. Offering sports betting in a competitive market requires lotteries to stay ahead of developments and operate as intelligently as possible. Protecting sporting integrity and having responsibility for offers are equally important factors.

The WLA The European Lotteries Sports Betting Marketing Seminar is an event that kicked off today in Paris, with a welcome speech by Stéphane Pallez, CEO of Française des Jeux; Arjan van 't Veer, General Secretary of EL, and Luca Esposito Poleo Esposito, Executive Director of WLA.

During the works, research by CK Consulting was presented which revealed that:

– Since 2017, EL members have achieved excellent results in sports betting (GGR 2017/2021: +78%), even in countries where the land-based business remains strong
– Turkey had the highest total sports betting GGR for 2021 and FDJ led European countries with the highest retail GGR
– The online market share of EL members has generally increased significantly during the Covid-19 emergency period
– More EL members offer e-sports accounting for up to 7% of sports betting GGR. (WLA photo)
