In a concerted effort to uphold the integrity of Michigan's gambling industry and protect consumers from unregulated and illegal activity, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) continued to identify and remove machines last year casino-style gaming and to dismantle illicit gambling operations.

Michigan law broadly prohibits any type of gambling unless specifically authorized, such as gaming machines operated within licensed casinos. Gaming machines have become a pressing concern with the potential to undermine the significant investments made by legitimate gaming establishments. Furthermore, these illicit operations often lack the necessary consumer protections that licensed and regulated establishments provide, leaving vulnerable people susceptible to unfair practices.

"Thanks to the vigilant oversight of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, agency personnel last year were able to target and disrupt several instances of illegal gambling activity that undermined the integrity of our legitimate, regulated gaming industry“, said the executive director of MGCB Henry Williams. "With a commitment to maintaining fairness, transparency and public trust, these proactive efforts were undertaken, with many suggestions from concerned Michiganders, to ensure safe and regulated gaming environments. I encourage the public to continue to submit suggestions, as we take them very seriously".

The MGCB hopes that by raising awareness about how they are acting on the information and removing such machines, citizens and business owners will take note of the consequences of illegal gambling in Michigan. In 2023, 64 Michigan businesses received letters to cease illegal gambling, resulting in 167 illegal gaming machines being removed and/or taken out of service.

Substantial progress has also been made in the confiscation and liquidation of assets related to illegal gambling operations. These seizures not only cripple financial networks that support illegal activities, but also serve as a deterrent to those considering engaging in such illegal practices. Following the MGCB's investigation and in cooperation with the Michigan Attorney General's Office, 79 machines used for illegal gambling were seized last year. Nine people were convicted of gambling and 24 people were charged with illegal gambling.

The MGCB's success last year in fighting slot machines and holding those involved accountable serves as a reminder that illegal gambling activities will not be tolerated in Michigan. The public is encouraged to report suspected illegal gambling activity by contacting the MGCB at 1-888-314-2682 or by texting [email protected].
