La FIGC posted on the site Activity Report 2022, which constitutes an annual reporting process born in 2015 aimed at strengthening the dimension of transparency and reporting on the activities carried out by the Federation, for the benefit of all stakeholders inside and outside the FIGC.

The report is developed through the drafting of specific Activity Reports by the various "functional areas" of the Federation, and is part of a more general program aimed at achieving the objective of good governance, in order to build an internal dialogue constant between areas and functions. The various federal offices periodically send a summary report of the activities carried out, which are summarized in this final document. In a nutshell, the Management Report constitutes a tool for verifying, monitoring and aligning management and administrative results with respect to the political guidelines dictated by federal bodies and corporate strategies.

The report highlights that as regards the sports betting sector, in 2022 the 11 matches of the men's national team produced an average collection per event of almost 3,7 million euros (with tax revenues of around 0,1 million ).

Much more detailed is the chapter on tax revenue provided through the Football Report 2023, which we reported last Friday.

The tax contribution

In 2020, the aggregate tax and social security contribution of Italian professional football exceeded 1,3 billion euros, a decrease of 10,8% compared to 2019. The item with the highest incidence continues to concern personal income tax withholdings, which weigh for 51% of the total (compared to 54% in 2019), with a figure of 669,9 million euros, a decrease of 16% compared to 2019, mainly in consideration of the decrease in income from employees, which went from over 1,9 billion euros in 2019 to 1,6 billion in 2020 (-15,3%), while the number of taxpayers remains substantially in line with 2019 (12.065 compared to 12.055).

The number of employees with incomes exceeding 200.000 euros reaches 1.079, a decrease compared to 1.150 in 2019 (record figure among those recorded since 2006). In 2020, the other main types of contributions concern the tax revenue deriving from football bets (253,1 million euros), VAT (182,4 million) and the INPS social security contribution (156,5 million), while the 'IRAP and IRES have less marked incidences (with data equal to 43,1 and 11,8 million euros respectively).

Despite the decrease witnessed in 2020, football continues to represent the main sports system from the point of view of the tax contribution; in aggregate terms, between 2006 and 2020 the total tax and social security contributions produced by the Italian professional system amounted to over 16,8 billion euros, of which 68% produced by Serie A (11,4 billion), 12% from Serie B (2 billion), 5% from Serie C (910 million) and the remaining 15% from football bets (2,5 billion). Compared to the over 50.000 companies and entities present in the Italian sports system, the 99 professional football clubs in 2020 alone account for 73,1% of the overall contribution generated by the Italian sports sector, the record incidence among those recorded since 2015.

The more specific analysis of the tax contribution deriving from betting also confirms in this case the prevalence of football compared to other sports: between 2006 and 2022 alone, the collection of bets increased more than 6 times, going from 2,1 to 13,2 342,4 billion euros, with tax revenues of 3,2 million euros, while the second sport, i.e. tennis, does not exceed 86,1 billion euros in collections and 2022 million in revenues. In 2, Serie A men's football alone produced revenues in Italy of almost 36,6 billion euros, while the estimated worldwide revenues reach 26,6 billion euros, mostly played in the Asia-Oceania area (8,1 732 billion) and Europe (695 billion), followed by South America (450 million), Africa (XNUMX million) and North America (XNUMX million).
