The Government and all parties in the Danish People's Assembly (Folketing) have entered into an agreement that will give associations in Denmark the best framework to ensure strong communities and to unite Danes in local communities through the opportunity to play Banko.

"Banko is a good Danish tradition, offering the opportunity to build meaningful communities and raise money for good causes. This is why I am pleased that, with the agreement, we are ensuring simpler and more up-to-date rules for the associations and organizations that organize Banko. We have found a model that greatly supports the many bingo and lottery games held today. The agreement ensures a good framework for gaming in Denmark and that more money goes to good local causes. I'm happy“, said the minister of Finance Jeppe Bruus.

The current rules mean that various associations are in conflict with the law because they do not have donation for a good cause at their core. At the same time, many associations and humanitarian organizations today have limited opportunities to organize lotteries in the way they would like.

The agreement changes this situation with simpler rules for lotteries and introduces three types of lotteries as an exception to the monopoly applicable to lotteries in Denmark:

  • 1) lotteries below a minimum threshold,
  • 2) non-profit lotteries,
  • 3) gambling on the liberalized market.

Key elements of the agreement:

  • Introduction of the minimum limit – less than 15.000 Danish crowns

No requirements for organiser, purpose, offer or profit. No supervision. For example, this could be a school class raising money for a camping trip.

  • 15.000 to 200.000 Danish crowns

Obligation to donate all profits to non-profit purposes. It applies only to voluntary associations and publicly supported bodies. For example, this could be a scout club or activity centre.

  • From 15.000 to 5 million Danish crowns

Obligation to donate all profits (minimum 15 percent of the sales price for associations and minimum 35 percent for others). This could be, for example, a sports club and a fundraising organisation.

  • 5 to 100 million DKK

Obligation to donate all profits (minimum 35% of the sales price).
