From 1 October 2023, it will be mandatory for Danish players to identify with a so-called Playing card when they purchase bets from a physical retailer, for example in kiosks or gaming shops. The card must be used when the player bets in physical stores.

There are no requirements for how individual game providers design their playing cards. This means that game providers themselves decide whether their game card is a virtual game card, for example in an app, or whether they issue a physical card.

In order for a player to obtain a gaming card, it must be linked to a gaming account with the gaming provider where winnings are deposited. Among other things, the playing card allows the player to set a limit on how much money they want to play. At the same time, the card ensures that the player does not lose his winnings, for example if a betting coupon was lost.

The game card means that a player who has locked himself out of playing in ROFUS after October 1, 2023 is also blocked from playing in physical stores.

The background to the requirements for player registration and the mandatory use of playing cards is the political desire to increase consumer protection and reduce the risk of young people under the age of 18 accessing brick-and-mortar gambling . Furthermore, there is a desire to intensify efforts to combat match-fixing and money laundering.

The implementation of a mandatory playing card in the physical betting market was politically agreed in November 2019.
