In November, Clarion Gaming confirmed its choice of the US-based International Center for Responsible Gaming (ICRG) as its new Charity Partner, following applications received from a total of 24 non-profit organizations active in the gaming sector. safe bet.

Founded in 1996, the ICRG has provided independent, peer-reviewed research to help increase understanding of the harms of gambling and find effective methods of mitigation. The work carried out by the ICRG impacts public policy and strengthens responsible gambling. As ICE opens its doors to the world of gaming, ICRG's director of tribal relations and communications, Nicole Scott, explains what this partnership means.

What does it mean to be named Clarion Gaming Charity Partner of the Year and how will you use ICE to promote the organization?

“Being named Clarion Gaming Charity Partner of the Year is a great honor and a testament to our dedicated efforts over the past 25 years. This award recognizes our ongoing commitment to using evidence-based research to reduce harm to gamblers. At ICE, our President, Art Paikowsky, will chair the Consumer Protection Zone program and will be a speaker during one of the sessions. This event provides Art with excellent networking opportunities, starting with the opening reception on Tuesday evening. He will also appear on several broadcasts during the conference."

Have you set any key goals as a result of your relationship with Clarion Gaming and what does success look like?

“Our collaboration with Clarion Gaming is focused on achieving key objectives that reflect our common vision. Succeeding in this endeavor means making significant strides in promoting responsible gaming practices and creating a better understanding of the ongoing quality of our research and educational efforts to advance critical discoveries. These efforts aim to benefit the industry and community at large, creating a ripple effect of positive change and responsible conduct across the industry.”

Will this be your first appearance at ICE and what are your perceptions of the event/what do you expect?

“Even though it won't be our first appearance at ICE, our enthusiasm remains as high as ever. ICE is a world-class platform for networking, sharing knowledge and keeping up to date with industry trends. We expect to encounter innovative technologies, engage in thought-provoking discussions and forge partnerships that align with and enhance our mission. These interactions are critical to driving our initiatives and broadening our impact. Participants must realize the critical role of our peer-reviewed, scientifically sound research in shaping sustainable industry practices.”

What's the next big piece of research you'll publish?

“To better understand the ICRG's role, we are creating a pool of resources to support the work of researchers working to better understand gambling disorder and problem gambling. A separate scientific advisory board oversees research funding decisions. This firewall prevents any concerns about search integrity. Researchers are responsible for publishing study results. One of our sports betting studies, expected to conclude in early 2024, is attracting considerable interest for its potential impact on understanding safe gambling practices.”

How important is it that gambling legislation is evidence-based and not politically motivated?

“Supporting evidence-based gambling legislation is a cornerstone of our approach. Such policies, based on empirical data and in-depth research, lead to more effective and balanced regulatory frameworks. This approach serves the interests of all stakeholders and plays a crucial role in creating a safer and more responsible gaming environment. This is a step forward in ensuring that decision-making is informed, fair and conducive to positive long-term outcomes. Furthermore, much of what is presented as research must follow the necessary rigors and be published, so maintaining the highest standards, a hallmark of ICRG-funded research, is particularly important.”

In 2018 ICE made history when it became the first trade show to feature a Consumer Protection Zone – how significant is it for a gambling trade show to have an area dedicated to safer gaming?

“ICE's Consumer Protection Zone is a critical initiative to promote safer gaming practices. It symbolizes the industry's commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and highlights the importance of responsible gaming. This dedicated space is more than just a feature of the event; it is critically important to promote this and ensure we are not preaching to the choir. Key informants from the C suite should be encouraged to come here to learn about innovations in responsible gaming practices.”
